The Refoška Festival is the central wine and cultural event of Slovenian Istria, which every year in May brings Marezige – the most beautiful viewpoint above Koper – to life for a few days. The event is not just a tasting of top-quality wines, but a true experience for all the senses. It combines tradition, cuisine, art, movement and authentic Istrian energy.
The roots of the holiday date back to 1921 , when the locals of Marezig bravely resisted fascist violence. This Marezig uprising is considered one of the first anti-fascist uprisings in Europe and has become a symbol of resistance. In memory of this historical moment, May 15th is now a municipal holiday of the City of Koper .
Since 1972, the Traditional Refoška Festival has also been celebrated at this time in Marezige , which has grown over the decades into a multi-day wine and social experience. About a decade ago, the festival took on an even broader meaning and name: the Festival of Slovenian Istria – this emphasized the cultural and wine-growing connection of the entire region.
In Marezige, the Refoška festival has a special emotional charge. Refoška is the king of the Istrian soil , the pride of local vineyards and a symbol of hard work and fertility. This festival is a thank you to nature, winegrowers and life – a festival of community, pride and tradition, passed down from generation to generation .
The holiday brings together locally produced wines, homemade food and a rich cultural program. The blessing of wine , tasting of young Refosco, song and dance create a warm, homely atmosphere that combines heritage with modern joy.
It’s not just a festival of wine – it’s a festival of people.
